Last Saturday, during our weekly Hits for Heroes session with Freedom Sings USA, a room full of veterans gathered for an in-depth conversation on military history and unit culture. We began exploring the distinct legacies of two elite forces within the Armed Forces: the U.S. Army Rangers and the U.S. Marine Corps Raiders. Though they serve under separate military branches with distinct operational doctrines, we found ourselves diving deep into their striking parallels. Both forces were born out of necessity in times of high-stakes conflict, designed to execute hard-hitting, deep penetration reconnaissance and raid missions behind enemy lines. Both faced repeated cycles of being disbanded when peace arrived, only to be forged anew when the world called them back.
Out of that powerful discussion came our newest song: "Rangers and Raiders."
The History Behind the Lyrics

The Genesis: Rogers, Darby, and Edson
The seeds of the Army Rangers stretch back to Colonial America with Robert Rogers’ Ranger rules, but the modern force was forged in 1942 when William O. Darby organized the 1st Ranger Battalion. That same year, Merritt A. "Red" Edson led the 1st Marine Raider Battalion in the Pacific. As the chorus honors: "Edson's boys hit the islands, showed the world what is real." From the Gilbert Islands and Russell Islands in the Pacific to the brutal assault on Pointe du Hoc in Normandy by Darby's men, both units proved that small, highly trained teams could shatter enemy momentum.
Silent Night Strikes: Makin Island and the Southern Cross
The second verse highlights the famous 1942 submarine-borne raid on Makin Island by Marine Raiders launching off the USS Nautilus. Operating under the dark skies of the Pacific, they navigated by the Southern Cross star constellation. That celestial imagery remains woven into Marine Special Operations to this day: "Star imagery upon the patch matching First Marine."
WWII Heroism: Cabanatuan and Edson's Ridge
During WWII, Rangers executed one of the most successful rescue missions in military history: the raid at Cabanatuan in the Philippines, freeing over 500 Allied prisoners of war from behind enemy lines. Meanwhile, on Guadalcanal, Marine Raiders held Edson's Ridge against overwhelming Japanese forces through pure discipline and grit, cementing their place in military history.
The LURPs of Vietnam and Rebirth
After WWII, both units were deactivated, but their necessity never faded. In the thick foliage of Vietnam, small, four-to-five-man Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol (LRP/LURP) teams moved like ghosts through the night. These teams were later redesignated under the 75th Infantry Regiment, keeping the Ranger legacy alive. Decades later, Marine Force Recon elements evolved into MARSOC (Marine Forces Special Operations Command), officially adopting the title "Raiders" to carry on the historical strain. Both lineages demonstrate a timeless truth: no matter how many times their colors are rolled up, these elite warriors rise again when the nation needs them most.
