By James Carden, CCI
In my research for the Davidic Protocol, I have looked for resources that bridge the gap between complex neuroscience and the "boots-on-the-ground" reality of a veteran or first responder dealing with high-intensity stress.
I recently stumbled upon a gem that is nearly impossible to find in stores: “I’M OKAY… RIGHT NOW… REALLY” by Dr. Michele DeMarco.
Doctor DeMarco is a specialist in moral injury and trauma, and in this short, highly illustrated book, she has done something remarkable she has simplified the most complex system in the human body into a field manual that anyone can use in real-time.
Why This Book is Essential for Veterans
For those of us who have served in Special Operations or Law Enforcement, we don't need a 500-page clinical textbook. We need a "Quick Reference Guide" for when the system starts to redline.
Dr. DeMarco breaks the nervous system down into the "Gas" (Sympathetic) and the "Brake" (Parasympathetic). As I’ve discussed in my white papers, many of us have a "Vagal Brake" that has failed. We are stuck with the gas pedal floored, even when we are sitting in our own living rooms.
The "Window of Tolerance"
One of the most important concepts DeMarco highlights is the Window of Tolerance. * The Red Zone (Hyper-arousal): You’re angry, panicked, or hyper-vigilant.
The Blue Zone (Hypo-arousal): You’re numb, depressed, or "checked out."
The Green Zone: This is where you are calm, present, and capable.
The Davidic Protocol is designed to widen your "Green Zone" through creative output. DeMarco’s book provides the somatic practices—breathing, posture, and grounding that help you stay there when the world starts to get loud.
The Science of the "Right Now"
What I love about this book is its focus on Real-Time intervention. It’s not about talking about your childhood for three years; it’s about what to do right now when your Vagus Nerve is sending a "Danger" signal to your brain.
She introduces practical tools like:
Vagal Tapping: Physical movements to stimulate the nerve.
Grounding: Techniques to pull your brain out of the "Amygdala Loop."
The Vagal Brake: Understanding how to manually engage your body’s calming system.
The Davidic Protocol Connection
In the Davidic Protocol, we use music to "vocalize" the trauma out of the body. Dr. Michele DeMarco provides the physiological foundation for why that works. She explains that "thinking your way to lasting calm" often doesn't work for trauma survivors. You have to body your way there.
Because this book is no longer easily available for purchase, and because I believe its message is vital for the mission of "That Others May Live," I am making it available here on Trauma Strummer.
Download the "I'm Okay" Field Manual
This is a short, easy read. You can finish it in one sitting, but the tools inside will last a lifetime. I highly recommend every veteran and first responder download this, keep it on their phone, and use it as a reference when the "switch" starts to wobble.
